Signing up as an affiliate for other programs is the simplest way to get started making money with your site. All the hard work has been done in advance by the company. Your job is simply to market the product or service. The big advantage is that it doesn't cost you money to join them, nor do you have to worry about getting a statistics program, merchant account, order page, etc. With an affiliate program they take care of all that, as you simply evaluate the affiliate program, join it, add the link from your site, do your marketing and earn commissions. Keep in mind that just signing up for hundreds of affiliate programs and adding their links to one page on your site is not going to make you rich. To make money with them you have to know how to promote them effectively.

Choosing an affiliate that doesn't have a good product or program will result in very few sales. It all depends on what one is selling, but on an average with most of the good affiliate programs I have run, I have gotten at least one sale in 250 visitors. I once tried an affiliate program for a company that at the time seemed like they had a great idea. However, when I started looking at the stats, I noticed I got only 1 signup in about 1,600 visitors. Don't copy mediocrity when you could be copying genius. Look for successful affiliate programs. I give you my selections that I have done well with and that you can use. But if you decide you would like to try other affiliate programs, there are thousands of other affiliate programs out there...just try and find some good success reviews from other people who have run the programs. Make sure that the affiliate programs you sign up with offer on-line statistic tracking, or, at the very least, email notification. If you have to hunt them down to find out what you've earned, you'll spend more time than the commissions are worth.

What is the pay out? If the program only offers a 5% commission, forget it, unless they sell some high ticket items like Rolex watches, otherwise 5% isn't enough to justify your efforts, also keep in mind that each company has a different pay out schedule. Some pay every month, others, twice a month, and others send you a check only after you have reached a certain dollar amount of commissions.

When you find the right affiliate programs to promote, here are some suggestions.

1. Provide a text link on your site, supported by an explanation or personal recommendation of the merchant or product, especially if you have previously used that merchant or product.

2. Don't get affiliate fever. Only sell products or services that are related to the content of your web site. You won't turn a good profit from linking to hundreds of web sites, but will most likely earn some extra revenue if you link to related items that your customers will be interested in. Focus on quality. Focus on a few programs. Focus on relationship building and those goals that are reachable. Keep it simple, stay organized and focus on building your network with 3 or 4 associate programs that you can sell very well.

3. Advertise within the content of your site. Weave the affiliate program offer into a recommendation and endorsement: an informative article where you talk about how
good the product is with a link to the sale, leading to an informed purchase decision.

4. Not advertising is a mistake people make. Just because the affiliate program is free they think advertising is free too. The Internet is not a free for all, like it used to be. You don't want to pay too much, but you want to have a budget for advertising just like you have to have a budget for training. I would recommend using the pay-per-click search engines and ezines ads for some low cost advertising for your affiliate programs.

In short, your time is important so use your energy wisely and effectively. Notice that these mistakes involve trying to communicate with strangers, ineffective advertising, too many products, and not doing your own research for affiliate programs. Those who focus and test will win. Those who get scattered and try every program under the sun, hoping one works, lose. It is simple human behavior. The most compelling products are delivered to an audience who are easily reached and interested in listening to what you have to offer. If you do these steps it is likely you will find increased success with your affiliate programs.
